Rant and a spoiler PSA [no actual spoilers, obviously]
Okay, can someone please explain to me what is so morally wrong about reading a leaked copy of HP:DH if you've already paid for a book and are going to line up at midnight to pick it up just like everyone else?

I mean, I understand the "robbing the author of her money" argument for the people who read the leaked copy and don't buy a book, but for fuck's sake, everyone involved in fandom is going to queue up at a release party or nip down to the nearest grocery store at midnight on Friday -- or sometime on Saturday. JKR's still going to get her bucks, and if people who are about to give her those bucks want to read the damn book off blurry photographs four days early, what the hell is wrong with that? If they're not posting uncut spoilery reactions to their journal and just reading it in private while they wait for the actual book to come out, I don't see what the big deal is. Spoiling others' fun is one thing, but if Fandomer X is merely reading the leaked book and not talking about it to anyone but his stuffed Chihuahua named Friskies (or other spoiler hors), wtf business is that of anyone's?

And a PSA, I suppose: the first 495 pages of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows leaked onto the internet yesterday. The remainder is expected to leak sometime tonight or tomorrow. There is word of organised efforts to spoil launch party lines, to broadcast spoilers over the Tannoy at shops (and airports? I doubt that one is true), and if you're a spoilerphobe, now would be a good time to limit your access to all mass media, not just the internet. In fact, I think fannish LJs are safer at this point than the streets in broad daylight, because most fen understand about spoilers.

As previously stated, I am reading spoilers (I'm spoiled absolutely rotten at this point), but this journal will remain spoiler-free* until Saturday, and after that, all spoilers will be behind a cut for a month.

I get that many of you don't want to be spoiled and I respect that enough to put a lid on speculation until we're all on common ground. However, that doesn't give any of you "O NOZ HOW DARE U READ THE LEAKED BUK" people the right to tell other people what to do with their free time. If I want to read the damn leaked pages, that's for me to decide, not for you.

*I will not post spoilers or so much as hint at them; I ask that others do not post spoilers in the comments of this LJ; I will delete any spoilers that might get posted in the comments as soon as I see them, and ban the commenter. I've turned off anon comments until Saturday, as well. That's all I can do.

ETA: Please don't ask me to link you to the leak, because I will not. This is a public post.

Son of ETA: I think I didn't make myself clear in the rant, so: DO NOT DISCUSS THE LEAK HERE, NOT EVEN IN THE MOST GENERAL TERMS. I will screen, even if it's "so how about that chapter 1, eh?" (this is a hypothetical example). Seriously. [info]spoil_me_dh is a venue for spoiler discussion (and there are massive spoilers there; do not click if you're a spoilerphobe). THIS LJ IS NOT. D:

I agree. There's nothing at all wrong with reading the spoilers. And no one's business. People are going to buy the book no matter what mostly because they want to find out if what they know is true.

I've mostly been hanging around at spoil_me_dh, so I had no idea people were actually getting crazy over the moral aspect of reading the leaked copy. Most people over at that comm were just concerned with whether they could get in trouble for downloading the files. I would be reading the book if it weren't for the the pages in which the text near the spine is unreadable... those just irk me. I'm mostly skimming it and reading spoilers people post from it.

I think it's going to be nearly impossible for people to avoid spoilers judging by the icons some users are making that contain them. How do you avoid those? They just pop up.

I was wondering when the rest would be leaked.

I pre-ordered the american version, but since it's not expected to ship until the week of Prophecy I'm going to buy the UK version at the bookstore as well. Mostly because I cannot go to Prophecy without reading the book. That would just be stupid.

I'm reading the leaked pages but I find I'm forgetting what happened as soon as I read it. It's like reading fic, almost. :x

Amen to your post, though.

This is somewhat vaguely related, but I'm hoping someone will understand my irritation... 4 girls walked into the OG the other day, all of them wearing matching, brandnew from Hot Topic tshirts, the Dumbledore dies on page whatever shirts. I just wanted to slap them and say "thanks, read it two years ago... the shirts are less funny now." But I didn't, cause they were like... 14, and I'm 22, and it would be assault and also quite wanky. But I hate those kids, lol.

I was accidentally spoiled for OotP and intentionally spoiled for HBP - re: major deaths anyway. I think it just took something out of the reading for me. While I've gotten a pretty good idea how this is all going to end - I don't want to know for sure. It'll kill the suspense in many scenes.

While I don't think it's morally reprehensible or anything like that, I'm really sad that the whole thing is getting/has been posted early. It just gives that much more information to the asshats. It's making me really wary of going to the midnight release party.

Also, the temptation is torturing me. woe. I just wanna know... and I won't be able read all night Friday so the opportunity to know now - sans being spoiled is so so tempting. XD

Yeah, I'm concerned about going to the midnight release parties now, not for myself but for my housemate. I don't mind the spoilers (I've not been paying a huge amount of attention to them, but I'm not avoiding them), but I know she doesn't want to be spoiled.

I'd have a hard time NOT reading the leaked copy if I had it in my hands. I mean, come on. I'm going to get my copy on Saturday morning, and i already paid the big bucks, so I agree with ya.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Ok, I'm going away. DOES NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED.

WELL SAID. I am still totally on the fence about whether or not I want to get spoiled, which will prob either mean that I end up avoiding them all together or end up getting spoiled accidentally and not minding so much so either way I guess it works out. *_* CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS IT. T_T

I've already paid for my copy, and JKR has gotten far too much of my hard-earned money over the years for me to feel even remotely guilty about it.

I really don't get why people get so upset about spoilers - for me, I find it easier to deal with things that (would) upset me if I know about them and can prepare myself first.

But I am weird, and I know it bothers a lot of people.

Eh, I don't have time to read until Saturday!

I'm not downloading books or anything because I will just read straight through as soon as it's in my grimy little paws, and there's still a week of work to do!

I'm still thinking about what I'm going to do wrt the leaked book. You're absolutely right; I'm buying the book at midnight on release day no matter what.

The reason I'm considering the leaked book at all is that the entire point of going to get the book at midnight is to avoid being spoiled. With something this available, I don't know how easy that's going to be. I'm looking at it as self-defense.

You know, I really don’t want to read the book until it comes out. Like, it's not even an issue of resisting temptation—I hate reading stuff from the computer, esp. from photos, and I want to enjoy my first read through. But I'm so afraid of some jackass spoiling the book that I'm actually debating if I should do it, just to have it read! (I don't think I actually am going to, but seriously, SO PARINOID. I am seriously re-thinking my release day plans. Not that I'm too worried, since I'm going to like, the smallest bookstore ever for the midnight party, but still).

But anyway, word. I don't care about other fen reading it if they want, as long as they aren’t jackasses about it (which most aren’t—it's the people who AREN’T in fandom who I'm scared of).

agreed.

i'm also spoiled about things i wanted to know about and feel much calmer about the advent of the book now.

question: at spoil_me_dh, do people discuss spoilers without a cut-tag? because i want to retain control over what i spoil myself with.
