Well, it's like this. I hate Harry/Ginny. I adore it in theory (come on, "best friend's sexpot younger sister"? Fuck yeah it works!), hate it in canon (put the chestmonster down and let the romance go, Jo, you have the right to remain silent) and especially hate it in fanon (because the more militant H/G shippers are so goddamned obnoxious that it becomes a matter of principle to hate the pairing). But this isn't about Harry/Ginny -- or, rather, not exactly. The point I'm making here is that I don't like the pairing, don't want to read it if I can help it and certainly don't want to write it ever. Because while it works for me in theory, canon has not made it work for me and it makes me want to throw up. This -- and I am aware of it fully -- is 100% subjective. Nineteen million motherfuckers will tell you I'm off my rocker for not seeing Teh True And Pure Love Of Teh Perfect Gryffindor Pair. And nineteen million motherfuckers just can't be wrong, yo.
Canon will do what it will, though I somehow doubt that JKR will ever write anything similar to "Harry married Ginny and they had several billion cute-as-a-button babies and NEVER DIVORCED UNTIL THE DAY THEY BOTH DIED TOGETHER IN THE SAME BED WITH CONTENTED SMILES PASTEDE ON THEIR FACES AND THEIR LOVING FAMILY SURROUNDING THEM AND THEY HAD A THREESOME WITH SIRIUS ONCE THEY PASSED INTO THE
At this point, Harry/Ginny is not "canon" (in the same way that Lucius/Narcissa or Arthur/Molly are canon) because they broke up. However, it is canon that Harry likes Ginny and she likes him back. It is canon that they went out for a number of weeks. It is even canon that they -- gasp -- kissed in front of their housemates and even in front of Ron. It is also a reasonable guess -- from canon -- that Harry would not have broken up with Ginny had there not been the small matter of Lordy Voldie out for Harry's blood (or other bodily fluids, but I defer to the Tom/Harry shippers on that particular angle). Of course, sans Lordy Voldie, Harry may never have even looked twice at Ginny, but I digress. >:)
Quibbles on definition here or there, Harry/Ginny is canon. I may gnash my teeth and make threatening noises and generally act ornery about this, but despite it all, I recognise that this is a canon pairing even though they are not *together* in canon at this point in time. As someone whose OTP is Harry/Draco, this presents me with problems not so much as a writer of fan fiction but as a reader. Because as a writer whose focus is primarily on storytelling and characterisation, I can think (and have thought) of many ways to get rid of Ginny -- some nice, some not. But as a reader, I've got more problems because a lot of the new H/D I see? Either ignores Ginny altogether like HBP hadn't happened or flatly dismisses Harry's feelings for Ginny in HBP as a "phase" Uh? I do so wonder what books these people are reading because I would dearly love to see the copy of the book where Harry DOES NOT earnestly tell Ginny that they "could've had years". Yeah, it's cheesy and annoying, but it happened.
I absolutely cannot read H/D fic now that does not account for Ginny in some way. I don't care if she dies gruesomely at the hands of Grawp and Dobby dances on her grave. I don't care if she turns evil and Harry kills her with his brain. I don't care if she decides that Harry's not pretty enough for her and hooks up with that studmuffin, Neville (or the ever-popular Stanley Shunpike, that epitome of all that is sex on legs). I don't care if it turns out that she really had been feeding Harry love potions (which is every H/D-er's favourite pet theory these days, myself included). I don't even care if Harry decides that Ginny's not the one for him because Draco is so much more interesting, in a pointy sort of way (ahaha oh wait, of course I wouldn't care about that, I wrote it! >.>) I don't care how it happens or why; I just want a resolution to Harry's redheaded little problem before I can believe a fic that pairs him with anyone but her, post-HBP. Doesn't apply to PWP, obviously, or fic written entirely from Draco's POV (even in that case -- if we're talking more than just smut -- Ginny's total absence will stick out, but not as much as in Harry-centric fic).
Basically, if a H/D fic written post-HBP fails to account for Ginny in some way? I'm disappointed and I can't believe it. It is not Harry to me who spares not a thought to Ginny after HBP, and if it's not Harry then it's not Harry/Draco, it's ... whatever you want to call it, but it ain't H/D, to me. I ship H/D because it is implausible, because it is a challenge to make it work in my own head. When I think Harry/Draco, I do not see cute!chibi!dork!Harry and gorgeous!smrt!sexgod!Draco or vice versa. I see anger, resentment, jealousy, mutual loathing, lack of respect and all-around unpleasantness. Going from that to respect, friendship, attraction, love? THAT is what appeals to me. The how and why that might happen -- if it can happen at all. It's not about the goddamned boyporn, k. Well, the boyporn is nice but if Harry isn't acting like Harry and Draco is not acting like Draco, I'm bloody well not interested. And I've learned to make allowances for a lot of things, like fanonised!Draco (though I draw the line at blushing!Harry because wtf, people, HARRY FREAKING POTTER WHO KILLED A BASILISK WHEN HE WAS TWELVE AND HAS BEEN GENERALLY STATE OF THE BADASS ART THROUGHOUT SIX BOOKS, WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU GETTING THE BLUSHING VIRGIN FROM?) Anyway, I digress again.
I was talking about Harry/Ginny. Hells bells -- yeah, they broke up, I'm aware. Thanks, I read the same book. But Harry obviously has feelings for Ginny -- chestmonstery or not, ill-conceived by Rowling or not, it's canon! I don't think Harry loves Ginny; even Rowling is careful enough to describe it as "like" in canon, even from Ginny's side (who's "liked" Harry since she was eleven. WTF creepy. Anyway. >.>) It's not omgtrueloveforeva!1 or anything but there are feelings, damn it. They're expressed in various ways throughout HBP; there is no denying that Harry Potter likes Ginny Weasley, he's attracted to her and, being a teenage boy, probably wants to fuck her brains out! The dynamic is perceptibly different from the Harry/Cho dynamic in books 4 and 5 -- there it was more like Harry fangirling Cho from afar, much more cerebral/platonic and much less physical, plus Cho totally flakes by the end of OotP so it was easy to simply ignore her skinny ass in post-OotP fic. But now? I just can't fucking see Harry nancing off into the sunset with Draco without a single word on what happened to Ginny. Sorry about that. When I open a H/D fic these days, I first do a search for "Ginny" in the document and if the word ain't there? I'm clicking the pretty little red X at the top, because hi, bored now.
ETA from comments: Avoiding Ginny in H/D fics isn't a problem if you're writing hatesex or PWP or just vignettes that illumine facets of H/D without bothering to construct a scenario wherein they actually *fall* for each other -- I don't mean that every little H/D fic ever is supposed to have a Ginny mention now. It's just when I open the first chapter of a novel-length written from Harry's POV and see zero mention of Ginny, I get irritated because if someone's going to make the effort to write a novel-length about the great and t00by buttsex, surely they can make the effort to at least write "Ginny accidentally fell in front of the Hogwarts Express and died. Harry was very sad."
Am I trying to tell people what to write? Fuck no! Write what you like. But if you choose to ignore Ginny in your H/D? Consider this my argumentative stance on why I choose to ignore your fic.
