make peace with an empty town

Dear Harry,

Happy birthday. I'm sorry you have such a crazy fandom. We love you really!

Love,

ETA: DD mods remove "miscegenation" from their tags.

I think oulangi's post on the subject is the most informative. In a nutshell, daily_deviant used the label "miscegenation" for its July kink challenge. oulangi's post explains what, exactly, is offensive about the term. There have been discontented (and disconnected) rumblings about using this term for a good couple of weeks, but it wasn't until zvi_likes_tv contacted the mods of daily_deviant with a very firmly worded request to stop using the term as a kink label, because it is offensive, that things began to speed southward. The mods wrote back with, esentially, "no." It all went downhill from there.

I used to refer to myself and other HP canon thumpers as "canon nazis", until someone on my flist asked me not to use the term "Nazi" in that way, because making it a cutesy fandom term doesn't erase the horror associated with it. I stopped, and now use "canon whore" more often than not. I expect that any minute now, someone will object that using the term "whore" in a cutesy fandom fashion is anti-feminist and offends them deeply. And you know what, if they do, I'll find another phrase to use. Because while I have absolutely no problem making fun of people for individual (or collective) stupidity (real or perceived), I don't think I have a "right" to use words whose history is steeped in discrimination, once someone has told me that they're bothered by my usage of the words. It doesn't matter that I don't mean to be offensive in my usage of the word. Intent is only half the battle.

I don't see it as a question of censorship, unless we are talking about self-censorship. For me it's a question of priorities: my free and unfettered use of words is not as important to me as potentially making someone feel discriminated against. And besides, there are lots of other words in the dictionary. ffs, are we writers or what?

Anyway, that's my personal stance on the matter. Personal as in I realise that everyone has a different opinion on this; I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do. This is just how I, personally, feel about using discriminatory language in fandom and in life. I am also quite curious how many people would now be up in arms if someone used "faggotry" as a kink label.

And now, for something completely different: my Prophecy itinerary! I look forward to seeing everyone again, and meeting everyone I haven't yet. :)
