CANON COMPLIANT = IN LINE WITH EXISTING CANON.
Okay, here is the deal. If Narcissa Malfoy randomly died on the day of the Battle of Hogwarts, yes, you DO need an explanation for how and why it happened, otherwise YOUR STORY IS NOT CANON COMPLIANT. IT IS A CANON FACT THAT THE LAST TIME WE SAW NARCISSA, SHE WAS ALIVE. If she is dead, I need to know how this happened. Her being randomly dead with a "Narcissa died during the battle of Hogwarts" is NOT CANON COMPLIANT. "Narcissa got hit by a stray curse from an escaping Dolohov's wand", on the other hand, is. IT'S NOT HARD.
If Draco and Luna are best friends in your story, no, it is not canon compliant, unless you've got a sentence to the effect of "Draco and Luna became great friends while they studied the mating habits of Blibbering Humdingers as part of their Healer curriculum at St. Mungo's." OR SOMETHING!!! If Luna is Draco's fag hag roommate with zero explanation, YOUR STORY IS NOT CANON COMPLIANT. Because I am sorry, but there is no indication in canon that Luna might wish to become Draco's fag hag roommate, no matter how strange and wonderful she is.
I'm seriously tired of clicking on stories that purport to be "DH compliant" only to back the fuck out the minute I find something that's just RANDOMLY THERE with ZERO canon indication -- I can't apply "don't like, don't read" because THE HEADER SAYS IT IS CANON COMPLIANT.
I LIKE CANON COMPLIANT STORIES, WHICH IS WHY I AM FAR MORE LIKELY TO CLICK ON THINGS THAT EXPLICITLY SAY THEY ARE CANON COMPLIANT.
Talk about false advertising, not to mention WASTING MY FUCKING TIME. FICCERS >:(
The examples are completely hypothetical and do not refer to any particular fic I have read, so if it's something in your fic, no, I am not talking about yours. And also, no, this is not about anything that may have JUST gone up at any of the exchange comms still posting. Just so we're clear. XP
