In my family and a part of my social circle (Russian expatriates), it's custom to say the equivalent of "happy International Women's Day; may you be blessed with [insert good things]". When I lived in the Soviet Union/Estonia, men and children would give women flowers on this day (many would also take over household chores). At my parents' workplace, there was usually a small celebration with hors d'oeuvres and a little bit of wine/champagne, and it would often be a short workday. In the evening, my parents often had people over, or went out to a friends' place. At school, we made token gifts for our female family members and female teachers (alongside the flowers). Thinking about it fills me with nostalgia and makes me a little sad that North America doesn't really celebrate today (not that nobody here does, but it's not part of the culture). Yeah, there's Mothers' Day, but not all women are mothers. I think Talk Like a Pirate Day gets more play than the 8th of March, really.
