From Foes to Fiendfyre to Family Men [Sunday, July 19 @ 10:30AM - Cyril Magnin I]
A Harry/Draco panel hosted by
The panel will address the challenges and opportunities presented to H/D fanfic writers by Deathly Hallows and discuss fanfiction writers' diverging interpretations of "canon compliance" in fic written after the book's publication. The epilogue-compliant versus EWE controversy will be a central focus; however, the panel also will address topics including an overall evaluation of how Deathly Hallows affects H/D as a ship within a historical context, trends in post-Deathly Hallows H/D fanfiction, and the issue of age bias as it relates to reading and writing epilogue-compliant fic (a.k.a., The Hairline Issue). Active audience participation will be encouraged.
Last time I was on an H/D panel, I totally heckled my fellow panelists.
If You've Got Nothing Nice to Say, Should You Say it Anyway? [Sunday, July 19 @ 03:00PM - Cyril Magnin III]
This roundtable will invite participants to discuss the pros and cons of criticism in fandom's creative subspaces -- criticism not only of fan works, but also of fannish behaviour. Did Fandom Wank ruin fandom, or does it help keep fannish absurdities in line? Do you think negative feedback inevitably crushes the spirits of creative fen? Perhaps you're positive that no one ever improves without criticism? If these are the kinds of questions that get you talking, you should totally come to my roundtable. And talk! I like to host roundtables because they let me wield a mic without having to talk into it, hur hur.
I'll start with a brief introduction to the two broad categories of criticism that happen in fandom regularly: fan work criticism (e.g. direct feedback, beta reading, reviews) and criticism of specific behaviours (e.g. sockpuppetry, plagiarism, bullying, various forms of attention-whoring, taking canon/fandom too seriously). We'll talk about people's own personal fandom DON'Ts and hopefully address a number of topics ranging from concrit to fandom etiquette to anonymity.
And, of course --
