Also, I see LJ has decided to start displaying country/city instead of just the IP address when a journal logs commenter IPs. And of course the pitchfork-waving has already begun, led by your usual friendly neighbourhood parade of n00bs who have absolutely no fucking clue how the internet works and think that location display is somehow especially invasive as compared to the plain old IP logging feature.
NEWSFLASH: Every time you choose to post a comment to the journal of someone who logs IPs, you are giving that person access to all the information contained in your IP address. That most people don't bother with tracking that information down (which is NOT HARD TO DO, oh my god) doesn't erase that information. That it is not written in English letters doesn't mean the information is not there.
If you're in the phone book, these days call display will show your name to whomever you call. The only way you can avoid that is by (usually) paying to be unlisted. If you don't want anyone on the Internet to know where you're from, get thee behind a proxy or surf anonymously.
Also, your IP address is not some kind of privacy tool. It is a series of numbers that is necessary to BROADCAST YOUR FUCKING NETWORK LOCATION TO THE WHOLE WORLD. WITHOUT IT YOU COULD NOT BE ON THE INTERNET AT ALL. WHY CAN'T THERE BE A REQUIREMENT FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE A FUNDAMENTALS KNOWLEDGE TEST BEFORE THEY'RE ALLOWED TO USE A COMPUTER.
